MALE’, Maldives; September 26, 2011 - The Maldives Game Fishing Association (MGFA) has officially opened entries for the inaugural Maldives Game Fishing Challenge in association with Dhiraagu, via the website, www.mgfa.org.mv. The tournament, set to take place in and around North and South Male’, and Vaavu atolls from 9 to 12 November this year, will be the first of its kind to be held in this pristine, ultimate and virtually untouched open water fishing destination.

The newly established MGFA has appointed an organizing committee comprised of IGFA representatives from the Maldives and Australia, prominent Maldivians and business and sports consultants from the region.

Up to 80 anglers from the Maldives and around the world are anticipated to compete in this international tournament that has received endorsement from the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) as an IGFA Offshore World Championship Qualifying Event.

Mr Ahmed Nazeer, Vice President of the MGFA and prominent Maldivian business man, is enthusiastic about the new event and what it means for the archipelago nation: “The Challenge offers the Maldives a new attraction on its tourism calendar, as well as a world-class fishing competition for Maldivians. We hope that over time it will attract international and local anglers who will fish side by side for years to come. And we hope that our tag-and-release focus will continue to encourage sustainable fishing practices and help to preserve our marine ecology.”

He is delighted to announce the association of the event with Dhiraagu. In attendance at the launch, Mr Ahmed Maumoon, Dhiraagu Head of Marketing said “This is the first time an International Game Fishing

Tournament is being introduced in the Maldives, and we are absolutely delighted to be part of such an event. Environment protection is a key focus area in our corporate social responsibility strategy and we are pleased to associate ourselves with an event that promotes the positive message of sustainable fishing that is both essential to preserve our fragile eco-system and tourism industry. We believe this partnership will reap benefits to both MGFA, Dhiraagu and help add value to the tourism industry and promote game fishing in the Maldives.”

Competition fishing will be in accordance with IGFA rules. The tournament’s targeted species are Marlin (Mas Hibaru), Sailfish (Hibaru), Yellowfin (Kanneli), Big Eye (Kanneli), and Dog Tooth Tuna (Voshi Mas) and Wahoo (Kuru Mas) using 20, 30, 50 and 80 pound line classes with minimum weights on all line classes. The MGFA organizing committee is keen to ensure that the event maintains an emphasis on ‘Tag and Release’ (where fish are captured, then revived and released back into the sea with an identifying tag attached) for scientific and conservation purposes.

The entry fee includes competition entry for three full days of fishing (10-12 November), a ticket to the welcome briefing and cocktail reception (9 November), a ticket to the presentation awards and dinner at the end of the tournament, a competition shirt and other sponsor goodies.
