    An impressive turn out in Chennai and Mumbai



    A delegation from Maldivian airline together with Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has just concluded a two city road-show in Chennai and Mumbai on 27th and 28th September with an impressive turn-out of more than 260 agents between two cities to explore business opportunities with Maldivian travel companies.The delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Hon. Mohamed Meleeh Jamal.  

    The road show was preceded by a press conference which was addressed by Abdul Haris, Managing Director (Maldivian) and by Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Republic of Maldives. The announcement made to the media and the Indian travel agents at the conference was the launch of start direct flights from Chennai and Mumbai to Male’ from November 15 this year. The flights will operate thrice a week.  Currently, Maldivian operates direct flights from Thiruvananthapuram to Male’.

    The major Indian travellers to Maldives are honeymooners. The average length of stay is four days, which is extended to a week. “Besides honeymooners, we are looking at tapping luxury, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences/Conventions, Exhibitions (MICE), high-end travellers and Bollywood celebrities. In addition, we are also focusing on landlocked areas in India, and hence we want to start with North India and then penetrate into cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad. We would like to cater to expatriates in major cities in India” added Mr. Jamal, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Republic of Maldives.

    One of the highlights of the event was the raffle draws that were given away; a free holiday prize to the Maldives including air tickets sponsored by Maldivian airline. The 3day 4 nights holidays were sponsored by Fourseasons Resorts Maldives at Kuda Huraa and Fourseasons Resorts Maldives at Landa Giraavaru, Medhufushi Island Resort, Paradise Island Resort & Spa, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and cruise trip by MV Anastasia by Lets Go Maldives, totaling free holidays for 16pax.

    Maldives received 931,333 international visitors in 2011, of which 30,978 were Indians, which is over three per cent of the total tourist arrivals. The Indian visitors were mainly from metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai. This year, from January to August, Maldives received 17,620 Indian arrivals.
