On Saturday 10th September 2011, the Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC) and Singapore Airlines proudly hosted the inaugural “Discover your Island” event at Nasandhura Palace Hotel from 1300hrs – 1700hrs.
The main objective of the event was to create networking opportunities for the visiting 37 agents from 33 different Travel Agencies/Tour Operators from China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and Korea to the Maldives amongst the local hoteliers and travel agents. With its close proximity and affluent outbound market, East Asia holds great potential for growth in the Maldives. There were 145,764 tourist arrivals to the Maldives from East Asia between January to July 2011. This accounts for a share of 28.7% of total tourist arrivals to the Maldives from this region. Currently Singapore Airlines operates 10 weekly flights to the Maldives with connections to various destinations worldwide via Singapore.
The MMPRC greatly appreciated the support given by the resorts: Kurumba Maldives, Anantara Resort & Spa Maldives, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, Bandos Island Resort and Spa, Meeru Island Resort, J Resorts Maldives at Alidhoo, Holiday Inn Kandooma and Sheraton Maldives at Fullmoon Resort in hosting the agents.
In addition to this, the MMPRC invited the local Maldivian travel agencies and operators to join the event and network with this important audience.
At the end of the event, a raffle draw was held and two visiting agents won holidays to the Maldives. The announcement created a real buzz and it was a stylish end to successful day. The two holidays were generously donated by Meeru Island Resort and J Resorts Alidhoo.
The MMPRC would again like to thank Singapore Airlines for being superb co-hosts and also GMR and Nasandhura Hotel for their support.
Finally, the MMPRC believes the best way to sell the Maldives is to let the target audience experience the Maldives! We look forward to working closely with airlines wishing to promote the Maldives in similar projects in the future.
