Maldives showcased in five major cities in China

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Honorable Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor has returned from a successful marketing tour in China. This tour was organized by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation in association with the Mega Maldives Airlines from 16th to 22nd April 2012. Five major cities were covered during this trip, which included Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai. The Maldives delegation, headed by the Minister, consisted of Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Mr. Mohamed Maleeh Jamal and officials from Ministry Tourism, Arts and Culture along with Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation and tourism industry representatives.

A tour operator event was carried out in each city, which was attended by major Chinese operators and the media. The Minister welcomed participants of the event in each city and addressed the gatherings. In his speeches he highlighted the importance of Chinese market to the Maldives and assured the tour operators that Maldives is and always will remain a safe destination for the visitors. Minister also met with some of the major Chinese tour operators individually and briefed them about the Maldives and investment opportunities in the tourism sector. He also gave interviews to some TV channels, newspapers and magazines.

A presentation on Maldives as a destination was given by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation. Apart from this, presentations were also given by Mega Maldives Airlines, Live-aboard Association of Maldives and GMR.

China has been one of the fastest growing markets to the Maldives. In 2009 China was ranked the 4th largest market to the Maldives with a total of 60,666 tourists capturing 9.2% market shares. By the end of 2010, China became the number one market by overtaking well established traditional markets to the Maldives from Europe such as United Kingdom, Italy and Germany. China is recorded as the first non-European market to be the market leader, since tourism began in the Maldives. At the end of 2011 China remained at the top rank with over 21% shares and total arrivals of 198,655. In January 2012, tourist arrivals from China recorded a heavy growth of 127%. However, due to the recent incidents in the Maldives, Chinese market registered negative growths during the months of February and March. Nonetheless Chinese market remains as the number one market at the end of March 2012 with 18% market shares and over 46,000 tourists during the period.

With the success of this marketing tour, it is expected that the Chinese arrivals will increase from May 2012 onwards.

    END.
