The first flight of Sichuan Airline landed at Male’ International Airport early morning on 28th July with approximately 240 passengers.
The Airbus A330-200 operates from Shuangliu International Airport, Chengdu and is scheduled to operate from 28th July to 28th October 2010.
The flight will operate to Maldives on every 5th day of the week and has a seating capacity of 245. A traditional dance “Bodu Beru” was performed to welcome the inaugural flight at the airport organized by the 100% Maldives Pvt Ltd together with Maldives Tourism Promotion Board. Currently there are 2 direct flights operating from China to the Maldives; China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines from Guangzhou and Kunming respectively.
With the operation of this flight to the Maldives, the arrivals from China are expected to increase during the period from August to October. This year from January to June, Maldives had a total of 50,197 arrivals from China, which is a 135.6% growth compared to the last year with a market share of 13.1%.
It is important to note that China has become the first Asian country to ever top the arrivals to the Maldives for the month of June with 8,615 arrivals with a market share of 19.6%, whereas, last year the total Chinese arrivals for the month of June was 3,226.
Maldives Tourism Promotion Board also conducted road shows to promote Maldives tourism in the Chinese market in the cities, Kunming (12th July), Guangdong (18th July) and Chengdu (19th July). The top 10 most popular nationalities to visit Maldives from January to June are UK, Italy, China, Germany, France, Russia, Japan, Switzerland, Korea and India respectively.
