An Online Training Program website www.visitmaldives.com.cn in Chinese was launched during the road show held on 18th June 2012 in Beijing, China coinciding with the Beijing International Travel Exchange that was held from 15 – 17 June 2012. The launching ceremony was attended by the Maldives High Commissioner to the China, Hon. Mohamed Rasheed, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture, and officials of MMPRC and the participants of BITE fair.

China is the fastest growing travel market in the world and the population centres are spread out over a wide geographical area. In order to service this divergent population, a comprehensive information and education online platform is necessary to train and send correct information for both travel agents and direct consumers.

The travel consultants working in the industry are young, technically savvy but short on travel experience and destination knowledge. Due to this information gap and the potential in the market creates competition among destinations to get their message across to these young agents to remember unique selling points and influence their clients to visit their specific destination to the exclusion of all others.

Tailor made on-line platform is the best tool for Maldives to access the Chinese travel industry and Chinese travelers. This is best achieved with regular and frequent positive reinforcement coupled with a reward which recognizes their competence

Maldives recorded a total of 73,339 tourist arrivals till end of May 2012, indicating a sign of continuous growth of tourists to the country. It represented an increase of 12.6 per cent.  China has emerged as the number 1 market since August 2010. This is the first time that an Asian country has taken over the number 1 position of tourist arrivals to the Maldives.
