The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation coordinated a familiarisation tour to the Maldives for a group of 2 journalists and a TV crew representing travel trade and general consumer via daily papers covering, TV and online magazine versions from 11 – 14 June 2012.
The main purpose of arranging such media fam trips is to bring journalists to Maldives to experience the product first hand in order to get positive editorial publicity about the destination. The group consists of a journalist from Travel Link Daily (whole of China) and online newsletter, Guangzhou Television (viewership 250 million) a Guangdong Province bases TV station and Dong Guan Time (circulation 1.20 million) a popular daily newspaper of China.
The journalists was hosted by Anantara Dhiggu (South Male’ Atoll) and Kurumba Maldives (North Male’ Atoll). They were accompanied by a representative from the Travel Link Marketing, the PR Agent of MMPRC for the China market.
The Chinese market performed well due to resuming of charter airlines with more frequency and flights from additional cities and strong demand for Maldives. The tour operators’ forecast indicates a phenomenal growth in June and July.
Chinese market is expected to remain by far the largest source market for Maldives.
Sri Lankan Airlines is expected to introduce additional capacity between China and Maldives.
China is considered an important market to the Maldives and it is the first time that an Asian country has taken the number one position in terms of arrival. A total of 73,339 arrivals were registered from Chinaby the end of May 2012. This is a 12.6 percent growth compared to the same period of last year.
