    Maldives participates at JATA Tourism Forum & Travel Showcase

    Male’, 06th October 2011; Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation together with 12 companies from the tourism industry of Maldives participated in the JATA Tourism Forum & Travel Showcase held in Tokyo, Japan from 29th September – 02nd October 2011.

    Statistical details from JATA 2011 reveal that there were a total of 117,236 visitors to the exhibition from 30th Sept – 02 October. A total of 37,705 belonged to the Travel Trade & Press and the remaining 79, 531 were from the general public.

    The first biennial JATA Tourism Congress & Travel fair was held in 1977, 13 years after the 1964 liberalization of overseas travel in Japan, just as the overseas travel industry was starting to take off when the number of Japanese overseas travelers stood at 3.15 million. In 2003, the Congress and Fair became an annual event with a huge space of 26,000 sqm.

    The Maldives had a 54sqm modern constructed stand. On 29th MMPRC together with the Ambassador of the Maldiaves High Commission in Tokyo Hon. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel attended the seminar on Japan outbound tourism. Same day at 1600hrs Ambassador also attended the official opening ceremony of the JATA Tourism Forum & Travel Showcase.

    On 30th MMPRC together with the High Commission of the Maldives in Tokyo participated in the the Seminar on Maldives / Sri Lanka organized by JATA for Japanese Travel Agents. During the seminar a presentation about the Maldives was given by the Ambassador Hon. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel. 

    At the end of the seminar a raffle draw was held and the winner was awarded a 4 nights holiday for two at the Maldives Resort; Adaaran Prestige Vaadhoo sponsored by the Adaaran Hotel Chain.

    JATA Maldivian Evening 2011

    On 30th September 2011, JATA Maldivian Evening was held at the Maldives / Sri Lanka Travel café (Café Oazo) at Yokohama Bay Quarter 3F. The event was attended by the Maldives tourism industry participants together with the travel agents and media from the Japan.

    At the end of the JATA Maldivian Evening a raffle draw was held where the winner was awarded a one week holiday for two in Paradise Island Resort sponsored by Villa Hotels.

    The raffle was open to all the visitors to the café for a week from 23rd – 30th September to celebrate Maldives week during JATA. A questionnaire about the Maldives was filled by each visitor to enter into the raffle draw.

    Maldives-Sri Lanka Travel Cafe with Sri Lankan Airlines was opened in Japan on 28th August 2011.  The cafe is located in Bay Quarter Yokahama at Jinjiang City, Yokohama, Kanagawa 1-10. It is just 3 minutes walk from the East Exit of Yokohama Station. (Yokohama is located on a peninsula facing the western side of Tokyo Bay, 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Tokyo, to which it is connected by a half-dozen railway lines as well as expressways and surface streets. It takes around 30 minutes by train).

    This travel cafe is a trial project and will be continued for a period of 3 months. After the trial period, the idea is to have the cafe relocated to Tokyo on a permanent basis.

    The cafe is designed to have a feel of both Maldives and Sri Lanka with pictures and display items from the two countries. The menu of the cafe also contains traditional dishes from both Maldives and Sri Lanka.

    JAPANESE ARRIVALS TO THE MALDIVES

    In 2010, Maldives recorded a total of 791,917 arrivals. Out of which a total of 38, 791 arrivals were Japanese nationalities. From January – August 2011, Maldives had a total of 22,602 Japanese arrivals which is a reduction of -3.9% compared to the same period in 2010. This may have been due the economic crisis caused by the recent Fukushima earthquake which hit during March 2011.
