    Strung out like pearls across the benign waters of Indian Ocean are the Maldives Islands, each a perfect smudge of white. The strongest winds are gentle breezes, and the highest points, the leaning palm fronds. Every dot is ringed in milky turquoise and soft, velveteen sand. Each lagoon is a point of stillness, but the encircling reefs bristle with life. It is among these coral atolls that Cocoa is located, a 40-minute speedboat from Malé international airport. At one end of this private island is a snaking, powdered spit sculpted by gentle evening tides. The beach is softly shelving, fringed with wild sea grapes, hibiscus and palms. In the distance, local fishing boats glide across a flat expanse. To hole up here is to discover escapism, or sweet serenity under a reliable sun. Rooms are inspired by local dhoni boats, adjoined by simple wooden walkways, built above the shallow ocean.
