    Maldives participates at ITB 2011

    Male’, 20 March 2011; The Hon. Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Dr. Mariyam Zulfa together with the Managing Director of MMPRC, Mr. Simon Hawkins led a delegation from Maldives to the 45th International Tourism Bourse (ITB) held in Berlin, Germany from 09 – 13 March 2011.

    The Maldivian delegation comprises of 181 participants representing 78 companies and 5 officials from the MMPRC. Statistical details from ITB 2011 reveal that with the total Exhibition area of 160,000 m2, a total of 11, 163 exhibitors together with 169,295 Visitors and 110,791 Trade Visitors.

     

    ITB Berlin is the B2B-Platform of all tourism industry offers with all levels of the industry including     tour operators, booking engines, destinations, airlines, and hotels right through to car rental companies. In addition, the world’s largest tourism convention Market Trends & Innovations provides unique opportunities to benefit from the global tourism industry.

     

    THE MALDIVES STAND

    The Maldives Pavilion with an area space of 405 sq. meters was prominently located at Hall5.2A stand number 107, next to the Sri Lanka and India Pavilions showcasing a resort of the Maldives.

     

    During the event, the Hon. Minister held interviews and meetings with the major German tour operators as well as Airlines and media.  The minister also participated at the panel on climate change convention and presented a paper about the Maldives. Also Dr. Zulfa gave information about the investment opportunities and government policies regarding the foreign investment in the Maldives.

     

    Mr. Simon Hawkins had back to back meetings including with BBC together with German, Swiss & UKs leading media companies as well as national airlines including Air Berlin & Emirates.

     

    At the stand laptops were set up for the public for voting the Maldives in the New 7 Wonders of the Nature.

     

    GERMAN ARRIVALS TO THE MALDIVES

    In 2010, Maldives recorded a total of 791,917 arrivals. Out of which a total of 77,108 arrivals were German nationalities which is 11.6% growth compared to 2009. Germany contributes 9.7% of the total market share of the Maldives tourism.

     

    In January 2011, Maldives had a total of 6,109 German arrivals which is a 3.7 increase compared to the same period in 2010.
