    Chinese Media Delegation Visits Maldives

    Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation in collaboration with Singapore Airlines and Kurumba Maldives hosted 11 journalists from different cities of China in Maldives from 25th – 27th March 2012. The main purpose of the visit was to strengthen Maldives exposure in China.

    The media group comprises of the most advanced and influential daily newspapers, fashion, life style and travel magazines from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing. A press conference was held with the Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture Hon. Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor, Deputy Minister Mr. Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, Singapore Airlines General Manager for Maldives Mr. Christopher Yap and representatives from the industry. They were also given a presentation on the destination by MMPRC.

    The journalists were updated on the status of tourism in Maldives. They were explained about the Maldives’ unique selling proposition of one island; one resort concept, where each resort island is geographically located separate from each other. China being the number one market for Maldives, promotional activities that are planned to boost the market were also shared. Measures relating to domestic environmental protection and investment opportunities were also highlighted in the press conference. The media delegation also met with the Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed. Apart from emphasizing on the political scenario and safety for travelers, the Minister thanked the Government of China for the great contribution rendered to Maldives and its people in various sectors.

    In 2011, Maldives recorded a total of 931,333 arrivals. Out of which a total of 198,655 arrivals were Chinese nationalities which is 67% growth compared to 2010.This year, end of February, Maldives received a total of 40,425 Chinese arrivals. China contributes 22% of the total market share of the Maldives tourism. Such media visits would help Maldives to strengthen the positive image of the destination as well as to boost the arrivals from China to reach the target of attracting a million tourists by the end of this year.
