Held at Baa Kamadhoo on December 16 and 17, 2011, the event kicked off to a roaring start with Hon Hassan Latheef, Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports; and Mr Armando Kraenzlin, Regional Vice President and General Manager, Four Seasons Resort Landaa Giraavaru beating the drums in rhythm. The Challenge saw six groups of performers aged 15 to 25 years old compete across six songs for a prize of MRF 100,000 to fund a community project and MRF 10,000 cash for themselves.

A panel of 4 judges: Ali Ahmed, President of Varutha Cultural Association; Mohamed Areef, Vice-President of Varutha; Shaaz Shareef, composer and music instructor; and Fazloon Hameed, co-founder of Varutha awarded YAMAK the highest overall score for drumming, cultural dances and singing based on cohesion, authenticity and originality across two exciting and hotly contested days of competition. The event came to a rousing end on December 17 with many of the local islanders joining in the fiesta of music and dance.

The Challenge was organised by Four Seasons Resorts Maldives in conjunction with Male’- based cultural arts institution, Varutha. In addition to celebrating the Baa Atoll’s designation as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the tournament also strived to highlight the importance of optimum social, economic and cultural conditions for environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the end of the tournament, Armando Kraenzlin paid tribute to the commitment, enthusiasm and talent of all the participating groups. “The Challenge itself, and the preceding workshop run by Varutha, have been a fantastic demonstration of the Baa’s Atoll’s rich cultural heritage, and the determination of the local youth to embrace and sustain it,” he commented. “The groups have done themselves and their Atoll proud.”
